Creativity Exposed; Maximizing Your Performance

I made a commitment over a year ago to release a new blog post each week. Typically, they are easy to author and pour out of me. This week was tougher. Perhaps it’s the distraction of the upcoming holiday or the heat and laziness of the summer setting in, but I was stuck.

The easy way out would be to re-issue an older post. But really, that’s a copout and also a disservice to my readership.

As I’ve stated in prior blog posts, I’m a collector of volumes of information; like a squirrel, I tuck things away for times of need. (For those familiar with Gallup Clifton StrengthsFinder terminology, Input is my #1.)

Usually, that’s a great thing. However in this instance, I now have a repository of so many topics that I want to address that I was in information overload. So there I was; my creativity exposed. Instead of forcing myself to write and getting frustrated, I stepped back and called a friend. The distraction was just what I needed; it was also a reminder for me to lean in to what I know about myself.

Through the years, I’ve developed a self-awareness about when I need to write or be creative. I’ve never been a night owl, thus I am least productive in the late afternoon or evening hours. It’s just the opposite when I first awaken in the morning. In fact, some of my best ideas awaken me while I’m in a state of non-REM sleep.

There’s a freedom (pun intended for this 4 th of July week) that comes when you become self-aware about the optimum times that your brain works for a specific task. For those curious, some of the topics that I have floating around in my head (and half-started on my computer) include the following:

  • Dear Client (things that we wish that they would do to help us)

  • When “May I Help You” Isn’t Enough

  • Top 50 Things I Want To Do Before I Turn 50

  • Confessions of A Deal Junkie

  • Would You Rather Get Hit By A Car Than Speak In Public?

  • Owning Your Own Voice

Any appealing to you? Feel free to write me with your thoughts about these or future topics at dlandry@authentizity.com. BTW — for you Seinfeld fans. Yes; this was a blog post about writing a blog post! Wishing you a safe and Happy 4 th of July week!
