The Advantages of a Big Hat!

As I’ve mentioned before, I consider myself an introvert who has taught herself extrovert characteristics.  While I don’t shy away from a party, there are times when small talk conversations can become rather tedious.

That’s when wearing a big hat can become a major advantage.

By adorning a large headpiece that covers your eyes, it provides a sense of mystery but also acts as a shield for those times when you disagree with what the other person is stating.  Additionally, when you find yourself disengaging from a boring conversation that your spouse or partner is engaged in with someone else, a hat helps to be less obvious as you doze off.  (You do need to watch what you do with your mouth, though, as more attention will be drawn there!)

Now I know why the folks in Europe LOVE those oh-so-large chapeaus.  And head gear comes in many variations/shapes/sizes; and it isn’t gender-specific.  There are so many options; whether it’s a Fedora, Panama, Stetson, Sombrero, Beret, or Straw, it’s your choice.

For the more follically-challenged man, there is an added appeal beyond the fashion statement.  Etiquette rules have even changed to make it far easier to sport.

Therefore, can we reinstate these accessories back into more social scenes?  I live in Houston, Texas — the land of the 10-gallon, cowboy hat; I would love to see them displayed more frequently than just during rodeo season.

Alas, here’s the moral of the story:  If you’re hosting your own party, consider making it a hat-themed affair.  That way your guests not only have an automatic conversation starter, but also a built-in disguise to help them navigate their introverted tendencies.  Happy Socializing!
